Marketing Through a Child’s Eyes: Rediscovering Wonder and Connection

“When children listen to music, they don’t just listen. They melt into the melody and flow with the rhythm. Something inside starts to unfold its wings — soon the child and the music are one.”

Michael Jackson

The king of pop noticed it well. Children don’t listen to music for the beats-per-minute, a breakdown of the lyrics or any other technicalities — they dive in, heart-first. They absorb the melody, letting it carry them to new places.

As marketers, we can learn a lot from that approach. In our hyper-focused pursuit of strategies and metrics, we often forget the magic — the unpolished, beautiful human connection. Today we want to explore how adopting a childlike perspective can transform not just our campaigns but the way we approach the art of marketing itself.

1. Feel First, Create Later

Us, marketers, are sometimes so quick in asking, “How can this sell?” that we skip over the far more important question, “How can this make someone feel?” Emotions drive decisions, and if we can’t tap into them, we’re just making noise. Think of your audience like a child hearing a favorite song. Your message should trigger a similar reaction in them — make their soul dance, sing and want to share with others.

2. Step Into Their World

Children don’t just passively consume music; they become a part of it. It’s not background noise — it’s the whole experience. They hum the tune, clap along, and in their minds, they are the melody. For them, there’s no separation between the song and themselves.

Marketers often talk about “understanding the audience,” but how often do we truly immerse ourselves in our audience’s world? Not just understanding their demographics but their dreams, struggles, and daily lives. The only way to make something catchy, is to make people feel like it belongs to them.

3. Curiosity Over Calculation

Children don’t sit down and decide whether they’ll like a song based on its technical complexity. They dive in with curiosity, ready to be surprised. They’ll sing the wrong lyrics or make up their own dance moves without hesitation. For them, it’s about discovery, not perfection.

Marketing, on the other hand, often gets bogged down by over-planning. Perfect campaigns, spotless graphics, and obsessively tweaked copy leave little room for the spark of curiosity. What if instead of aiming for perfection, you let your curiosity guide you?

Marketing That Feels Alive

Children teach us that the most meaningful connections don’t happen by overthinking — they happen by feeling, by trusting the moment, by letting go of perfection. Marketing that resonates isn’t about finding the right words or platforms; it’s about capturing the spirit of a shared experience.

So, let your campaigns dance a little. Give them the freedom to explore. And if in doubt, you can always count on us at Mindblow for your next campaign!
